Learning Support

Our Commitment to Student Support

At Schutz, we pride ourselves on providing an appropriate and challenging education for a wide variety of learning profiles. Admission is open to students whom we can support responsibly within our existing resource framework. For students requiring specialized services, additional fees may apply to ensure high-quality, targeted instruction. Please note that for students with intensive needs, admission is contingent upon the availability of specific resources and a review by our Student Support Team to ensure a safe and productive environment for all learners.

We believe:

  • Education is enhanced by the creation of affirmative, responsive environments that promote a sense of belonging, safety, self-worth and growth for every student.
  • Diversity in learning is a rich resource for building inclusive communities.
  • That all students can and want to learn.
  • All students need to have an opportunity to discover, find and pursue their passions and reach their potential.
  • Ensuring students have access to what they need to learn, when they need it, is equally as important as the curriculum we teach.
  • That a variety of strategies and specialists are necessary in order to become more effective in assisting students and teachers.
  • All students will develop the Schutz Learner Profile attributes and develop into inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through multi-cultural understanding and respect.
  • Learning is considered from a strength-based perspective. We identify areas of strength for all students and use those skills as a strong foundation for all additional instruction and learning.
  • The relationship between teacher and student has a significant impact on how well the student learns.
  • All students need to know themselves as learners and know how to advocate for their learning.
  • Planning for students with special needs requires flexibility, open-mindedness, and patience.

Schutz provides a limited amount of services to “typical” or “average” students who are struggling.  These include:

  • Differentiation and personalized learning in the classroom.
  • Small class sizes to support student success.
  • Support with the teacher, Inclusive Educator, Learning Support Teacher or Learning Assistant as needed when available.
  • EAL program support on a limited level.
  • Counseling services for students needing behavior support, limited in scope and time.
  • Online classes for students in the secondary to support student success.
  • Advisory and morning meeting to support social emotional health in all grades.

How do we support your child?

  • What is MTSS? It is our school-wide “umbrella” for support. It ensures we are looking at the whole child—not just their grades, but also their behavior and emotional well-being.
  • What is RtI? This is the specific process we use to help students who may be struggling in a particular subject. We use data to identify gaps early and provide “just-in-time” support to help them close those gaps.
  • Our Promise: Through these models, we guarantee that instruction is never “one size fits all.” We adapt our teaching strategies based on your child’s unique data and growth.
